- D&H's Employee Stock Ownership Plan Has Inspired Loyalty, a Shared Work Ethic, and an Extraordinary Team Atmosphere For More Than Two Decades -

HARRISBURG, PA - October 2, 2018 - In recognition of the ESOP Association celebrating Employee Ownership Month in October, D&H Distributing is proud to commemorate its 20th year as an Employee-Owned ESOP company. D&H is a major provider of business and consumer technologies to the IT and retail channel and one of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania's, largest employers. The distributor's Employee Stock Ownership Plan has invested more than 1,000 of the company's employees--since known as "co-owners"--in the business. This translates to 36% of the company being owned by its staff. D&H Distributing is a fourth-generation, family-run company founded in 1918, making 2018 the company's Centennial anniversary. The company's ESOP program was established in 1998.

Fewer than one-eighth of US businesses have ESOP plans in place, which according to D&H's executive management, makes it one of the best kept secrets of the commercial community. New D&H employees become eligible for the ESOP after 90 days of employment, become partially vested upon their two-year anniversary of employment, and reach full vestment after their sixth year of employment. D&H's co-presidents meet with eligible co-owners after their 90-day period to review their ESOP expectations and future benefits. The distributor also holds "Town Hall" meetings on a recurring basis where co-owners can express ideas or concerns in a supportive forum.

"The D&H ESOP program has taken us to a new stratosphere of collaboration, shared values, partnership, and alignment," said Dan Schwab, co-president at D&H along with his brother Michael Schwab. "Everyone in the company shares goals and vision, which yields to tremendous workplace pride and determination, and in turn, generates success."

All D&H personnel become vested in the results of their labor, and therefore are motivated to excel at their tasks, pool their resources, and work harmoniously to deliver outstanding service to the company's customer base. This collective goal has fostered an exceptional environment at D&H. The distributor's family culture extends to its co-owner staff of more than 1,200 in the US and Canada, both figuratively and literally, with 16 different families being employed by the company nationwide.

A positive work/life balance has been strictly encouraged at D&H. "We spend a good deal of time together," continued Dan Schwab, "so we've created ways to enjoy much of that time and involve our families." Family-based and fun activities include company picnics, food truck days, family movie nights, office contests, bring your child to work days, a charity "Dunk Tank" day, and trips to the local Senators baseball games.

Company benefits emphasize physical, personal, and financial wellness. This includes on-site walking tracks, health club membership and smoking cessation reimbursements, and participation-based healthcare savings plans. Other offerings include 401K matching, flexible time off, employee loans, tuition reimbursement, and financial education seminars.

In addition, D&H team members took it upon themselves to launch a "D&H Cares" charity foundation more than ten years ago. It's completely run by co-owners, independent of D&H's corporate donation activities. Team members contribute both time and funds to this foundation, raising tens of thousands of dollars for local and regional not-for-profits.

"D&H has always been a family business with an inclusive and cooperative environment, where co-owners of all levels are encouraged to contribute their talents and ideas toward a communal goal," said Michael Schwab, co-president at D&H. "Our ESOP co-owners treat the organization as if it's their own small business, because they're rewarded based on the company's success."

"The program makes incredible sense," notes Dan Schwab. "In the long-term, D&H's cost to maintain an ESOP plan is similar to any other employee benefit. It provides one of the most valuable incentives we could think of for our team members, supplementing their compensation while immersing them in the outcome of the company, for relatively the same investment as a traditional benefit."
